The Reverend Ryenold John Matus, who was pastor of St. George Catholic Church in Ft. Worth, one of the most culturally diverse Christian communities in Texas, died of cancer on March 3, 1994 at his home in Ft. Worth. He was 53. Vigils in different languages, including Spanish, Laotian and Vietnamese, were conducted the following Sunday at the church. The Office of the Dead evening prayer was conducted at 6 p.m. Monday followed by rosary at 7 p.m. and vigil at 7:30. Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Most Rev. Joseph P. Delaney, bishop of Ft. Worth, as principal celebrant. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Ft. Worth. Father Ronnie, a native of Tours, had been at St. George for 11 years, ministering to parishioners of Hispanic, Laotian, Vietnamese, and Anglo heritage. The church bulletin is written in four languages. After ordination in 1979, he became associate pastor at St. Vincent DePaul in Arlington. Afterwards, he served as administrator at Immaculate Heart of Mary at Abbott and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Penelope before coming to St. George’s. He was reared in Dallas South Oak Cliff area and was a graduate of Jesuit High School in Dallas. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dallas and a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Notre Dame Seminary in 1979. He was a member of the K.J.T. Society of Dallas and Knights of Columbus Council 4709. Father Ronnie is the son of Irene Hlavenka Matus and the late John Matus. He is survived by his mother who lives in Dallas; two sisters, Betty Pekar of Amarillo and Mary Ann Krajca of Dallas; nine nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. He is the grandson of the late Anton and Mary Hlavenka of Tours and the late John and Johanna Matus of West. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 104, No. 11, Edition 1 – Thursday, March 17, 1994
