Rites Held at Alton Reformed Church For Mrs. J. Ver Hoef, Early Resident Funeral services were held Sept. 27 in the Reformed Church at Alton for Mrs. Johanna Ver Hoef, who died Sept. 24 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital at the age of 83 years and 11 months. Burial was in the Orange City cemetery. Mrs. Ver Hoef, the former Johanna De Roos, was born at Orange City Oct. 22, 1881. She was married to Cornelius Ver Hoef Sept. 21, 1905 at Boyden. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Opke De Roos, were from a pioneer Sioux County family. Mrs. Ver Hoef lived the greater part of her life in this county. Her husband died in 1945. Survivors include five children: Catherine, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, Paullina; Orville, Sheldon; Walter, Long Beach, Calif.; Tillie, Mrs. Kenneth Scholten, Bellflower, Cal.; Matthew, Santa Ana, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; 7 sisters and brothers: Mrs. R. P. Dethmers (Agnes) Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Richard Vande Vegte (Mary) Rock Valley; John De Roos, Rock Rapids; Andrew De Roos, San Leandro, Calif.; Mrs. Bert Vander Schaaf (Josie), Sheboygan, Wis.; Mrs. Henry Huibregtse (Mina), Hull; Mrs. Dick Vogel (Harriet), Bemidji, Minn. Before going to the hospital Mrs. Ver Hoef lived for five years with her daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, at Paullina. Before Mr. Ver Hoef's death the family lived for some years in Alton, where they had many friends and were members of the local Reformed church. A great many relatives and friends were here for the funeral, some from out of the state and others from neighboring towns and cities. Alton Democrat 1965-10-07.
