Bio

OBIT: Hal Haynes Watterson was born May 11, 1904 inn Rogersville, Tennessee, a Mother's Day present to Cornelius C. and Margaret (Derrick) Watterson. He lived and worked on his parents' farm with his father, raising Tennessee Walker horses. He played minor league baseball until he moved to Washington State. Hal was married briefly, then divorced when he joined the Merchant Marines during Worl War II. Hal was stationed in the Aleutian Island, where he worked as a cook. After WWII, he came back to Washington State and settled in Ellensburg, working first for Arlie and then for Paul Harrell. He worked the Harrell's farm alone for many years raising Timothy hay and Hereford cattle. Hal courted Jane Potts for more than 30 years until her death in 1987. He continued to buy Channel No. 5 perfume for her at Christmas for several years after her death. Hal lived alone in Ellensburg until after he turned 94. He passed away quietly in the night on September 6, 1998 at Crescent Convalescent Center following a long battle with heart problems. He is survived by his family in Yakima, Patsy and Rebel Garman, Darnell Ray, Hal Elsberry; the Maxey family, Ricky, Katie, and Chance and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 at the High Valley Cemetery in Ellensburg. Keith and Keith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
