Walter Howard Winkle, 85, of Fred, Texas, passed away Feb. 8, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 11 from the chapel of the Riley Funeral Home in Woodville with Bro. Derrell Young officiating. Interment followed at Turner Branch Cemetery near Spurger. Mr. Winkle was born September 20, 1917 to John Arthur and Mary Alice Willy Winkle who preceded him in death. He was a retired supervisor from Ironworkers Local #125. He was also a navy veteran. Survivors include daughter, Gayle Moore of Fred; two sons, Melvin Winkle of Spurger and Larry Winkle and wife Cari of Spurger; children's mother, Mary Clowers of Spurger; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Susie Sample of Splendora Verlee Smith of Silsbee, Dimp Levins of Spurger, Geraldine Morvee of Conroe and Madeline Minter of Angleton; sisters-in-law, Annie Winkle of Orange and Ernestine Winkle of Tennessee Colony; numerous nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers were Buster Norris, Rusty Norris, Keith Winkle, Bubba Winkle, Jason Winkle and Gary Minter. Honorary pallbearers were John Minter and Davis Minter. Special care givers during his illness were Wanda Dowden, Stuart Moore and Anita Sturrock. Services were under the direction of Riley Funeral Home of Tyler County.
