Bio

ORD — Betty Pesek, 82, of Ord died on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the Valley County Health System Hospital at Ord. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Doug Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. She was born on Dec. 14, 1930, at North Loup to Gerald and Ora (Walkup) Manchester. She married Joe M. Pesek Jr. on Nov. 21, 1951, at the Custer County Courthouse in Broken Bow. He died in 1996. Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Gary Bruha of Ord and Julie and Carl Liles of Winside; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bethene and Gary Paider of Ord and Phyllis and Bud Kallhoff of Arcadia; and one brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Shirley Manchester of Ord. Betty attended country schools up through the eighth grade. She then worked in country homes cooking, cleaning and helping with children. She and Joe had three children, Eileen, Emil and Julie. Betty cleaned homes for doctors’ wives as well as cooking for Walt and Marg Douthit. She also took in laundry from a local barber. Betty continued to clean homes up until her 50s before working for her nieces watching their children in their homes. After Joe passed away in 1996, she retired to Rolling Hills, and in April 2007, Betty made her home at the Valley View Living Center at Ord. Betty loved to bake kolaches and shared them with many during the Christmas season. She loved to embroider dish towels and made many sets for her grandchildren and friends. She continued to embroider until right before her death. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by a son, Emil; three brothers, Lyle, Alvin and Kenneth Manchester; and three sisters, Esther Manchester, Ruth Wheeler and Evelyn Janicek.
