During the St. Mihiel Offensive. He may or may not be buried with this headstone in Kansas. As so many men died during the battle, he could possibly be buried at The St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial, which is located at the west edge of Thiaucourt (Meurthe-et-Moselle), France. The cemetery, 40.5 acres in extent and contains the graves of 4,153 of American military dead and unknowns during World War I. The majority of these died in the offensive that resulted in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient that threatened Paris. If he is actually buried in France (his name does not show up anywhere in the cemetery records which means he either is NOT here in France, or that his body was not verifiable) then the headstone in Kansas is just for family closure.
