Rosenberg Herald, July 31, 1942: Funeral services for Mr. John Miller, Sr. were held at the Immanuel's Church in Needville Friday afternoon, July 24, at 4:45 o'clock. The pastor, Rev. Wm. E. Scholze, conducted the services. Interment took place in the Immanuel's Cemetery, with the Foerster Funeral Home of Rosenberg in charge of funeral arrangements. The following served as pallbearers: Sonie Kettler, Lee Roy Tielke, Buddie Zich, Ervin Miller, Ernest Hilderbrandt, and Raymond Tielke. Mr. Miller's death occurred Thursday morning, July 24, 1942, at 5:30 o'clock. Last November he fell and broke his hip and it became necessary for him to remain in bed helpless until death came to relieve him on the above date at the age of 91 years. Mr. Miller was born on March 21, 1851 in Beyern, Germany. At the age of 17 years he came to America with his oldest brother, where he remained until his death. On January 10, 1882, he was married to Miss Katie Muehlberger in the Berlin Lutheran Church, Washington County, Texas, by the Rev. Letterman. He first moved with his family from Brenham to Lyons, Texas, but in 1907 he moved to Fort Bend County, settling near Needville. He remained in Needville until six years ago when he and his wife discontinued living alone and moved with their daughter, Mrs. Henry Kettler, in Beasley, and where his wife preceded him in death in 1939. Mr. Miller was a fine Christian gentleman, esteemed by all of his acquaintances. He was one of the first trustees of the Mount Prairie Church and was the oldest member, in the point of age, of the Immanuel's Church at the time of his passing. Surviving Mr. Miller are two sons, John and Henry Miller of Needville; four daughters, Mrs. Henry Hildebrandt of Baldwell, Mrs. Henry Kettler of Beasley, Mrs. Charlie Zich and Mrs. Willie Tielke of Needville; thirty-four grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and a host of friends. His wife and two children preceded him in death. Friends extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved.
