World War II Cryptographer Teacher and Writer Obituary for Helen Dayton Elek: Helen Dayton Elek, a longtime resident of Dallas, died June 14 at age 91 following a lengthy illness. The daughter of Algernon and Hazel Dayton, she was born and raised in Lawton, OK. In 1942 she received a Master's Degree in Mathematics at Oklahoma A&M (now OSU). During WWII she worked in Washington, DC as a cryptanalyst for the Signal Corps and later as a reporter for the Stonehouse News Agency. She was a member of the mathematics faculty at Oklahoma A&M for six years and taught part time at Mountain View and Brookhaven Community Colleges in Dallas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Martin Elek, sister Zona Wilson, and brothers Keith and Lloyd Dayton. She is survived by [2 daughters & son; 4; sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews]. Burial will be private with a remembrance and reception at 11:30 am, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the family home.
