Bio

Raymond Milliken was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Wilson and passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2005 in Lubbock. Ray, as he preferred to be called, lived a full life for almost 89 years. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock with burial to follow at the Englewood Cemetery in Slaton under the care of Sanders Funeral Home. Ray was the son of the late Robert Bonner Milliken and Irene Cullins Milliken and was one of seven children. He grew up in Wilson and joined the CCC's during the severe years of the Depression. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1940 to 1946 and saw action across the Pacific including the fierce battles at Guadalcanal and Tarawa. Ray married Marie Williams of Denver City while on a brief leave from the battlefield on July 1, 1944. Ray became a Christian at the age of 25 and devoted his life to following Christ. He strove to live the Christian faith in his church, home and workplace. Friends and family describe his life as one of faithfulness to his Lord and his Christian principles. He was a charter member of Southcrest Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and mens Bible teacher for 44 years. Following the war, he attended and graduated from Wayland Baptist University. Raymond and Marie had two children, Jerry Michael and Mary Ann. Ray worked many years at the Texas Employment Commission in Lubbock, retiring in 1978. His wife, Marie, started home health care in West Texas, and founded Meals on Wheels in Lubbock. After retirement, Ray delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, on April 13, 2004; his son, Mike, on March 11, 1999; and his two brothers, Troy Milliken, of Abilene and Robert F. Milliken of Slaton; and his sister, Bravis Smith, of Houston. Until the last few months of his life, Ray was cared for at home and is survived by his loving daughter, Mary Ann Gallaway and her husband the Rev. Randall (Randy) Gallaway and their children, John and Amy of Lubbock. Ray is also survived by his foster daughter, Sherry Farnham of Austin; his foster grandson, Eric Shores and his wife, Rebecca, and their two children; all of Austin; his brothers, Doug Milliken of Slaton and Pat Milliken of Lubbock; and his sister, Carol Fogg, of Windham, Maine.
