Mary Marie Milliken was born Oct. 15,1922, in Erath County, Texas and passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at home surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock. Marie was the daughter of the late A.O. Williams and Florence Brandon Williams. She married Raymond A. Milliken in Los Angles, Calif. July 1, 1944. Marie was a Christian and her life was devoted to living by Christian principles. She was a charter member of Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock. Marie graduated from Denver City High School in 1941 and Lubbock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. Her chosen profession in nursing led her to the realization of the lack of health care available for the elderly. In 1969, she received a certification to open the first home health agency in the South Plains. Marie never forgot the needs of our homebound citizens. During her visits in the homes of sick and elderly clien ts another need came to her attention. In the Spring of 1971, she was the driving force who wrote and received a small grant to implement a "Meals On Wheels" program. She organized Meals on Wheels first board of directors and served on that board for 20 years. Over the years, Marie devoted many days testifying before Congress for better health care for the elderly in our nation. Through her efforts, and others who were there with her, changes begin to happen. She was appointed by Governor Preston Smith to serve as one of the first Silver-Haired Legislators in the State of Texas. In 1982, Governor Clements named her to the Advisory Counci1 for Home Health Agencies in Texas. She served on many committees and boards for the Texas Association of Home Health Agencies and was elected president of that organization from I976-1978. She was awarded the Ida Mae Herbert award on Sept. 7, 1989, for meritorious service to the Home Health Industry. She was greatly respected by co-workers, employees, family and friends. She retired in 1991. She was preceded in death by her son, Mike Milliken of Ft. Worth and her three brothers, Arlie Carroll, Leonard Dean, and Charles Lloyd, all of Denver City. She is survived by her loving husband, Ray Milliken; her daughter, Mary Ann Gallaway, and her husband, Randy, and their children, John and Amy of Lubbock; her foster daughter, Sherry Farnham of Lenexa, Kan.; her foster grandson, Eric Shores and his wife, Rebecca, and their two children. She is also survived by two sisters, Dora Alderson of Lamesa, and Edith Kidd of Denver City; two brothers, Wayne and Albert Williams of Denver City; and many nieces and nephews.
