(Matthiesen) Grand Island Daily Independent Tuesday 22 May 1894 Our old time friend, Mr. Fred Lilienthal, one of the pioneer farmers of Hall county, died at the hospital in this city from protracted bowel troubles, with which he had been afflicted for years. He has been a hard working, industrious husbandman, and has acquired a fine farm, nine miles southwest of the city, where with his family he resided. the deceased was about 42 years old, a sufferer for years from the trouble which seemed to baffle the skill of physicians both here and in Germany - having a few years ago visited the old country for treatment, but receiving only temporary relief. He leaves a wife and large family to mourn his death, and friends who knew his good qualities as well as his failings. It is thought that a post mortem examination will be made, as soon as the wishes of the family can be ascertained, that science may be benefited by a true knowledge of this distressing case. Grand Island Daily Independent 25 May 1894 The funeral of Mr. Fred Lilienthal took place yesterday noon from the hospital largely attended by friends of the family.
