Grand Island Daily Independent Monday 14 June 1897 The death of Mr. Charles Lilienthal occurred at the St. Francis hospital yesterday morning. Mr. L. was taken sick early last week and it was supposed that he was suffering from appendicitis. No improvement could be secured in his condition without and operation and he was brought to St. Francis hospital Friday afternoon for operation. The same was performed but the physicians had not proceeded very far when they discovered that the cause of the trouble was not really appendicitis but what would probably be termed a strangulation of the intestines, and a peculiar one. the trouble was remedied and the patient first gave hope of recovery. However, yesterday morning he passed away. It is stated the cause of the death was one that would not occur once in a thousand times and the case will very likely find itself in medical and surgical journals. The funeral was held from the residence of Mrs. Emma Schlotfeldt this afternoon. He was unmarried but leaves a brother, a farmer living near the Merrick county line and a sister-in-law in this vicinity and other relatives at a distance.
