Bio

Elaine (Hilger)Spieker, 78 years, of Fremont, Nebraska died Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont. Elaine was born April 30, 1934 in Elgin, Nebraska to Harry and Philomena (Buddecke) Hilger. She grew up in Elgin and was a 1952 graduate of St. Boniface Catholic High School in Elgin. After graduation she lived in Omaha for a couple of years, and worked in the office at Merchant Motor Freight. Elaine married LeRoy Spieker on October 2, 1954 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. They were married for 58 years and lived in Petersburg, Nebraska from 1954 to 1962, then lived in Bloomfield and Randolph, Nebraska before settling in Fremont in 1975. Elaine worked in the kitchen and as a first greeter at the Fremont Area Medical Center. She was the mother of 11 children, grandmother of 19, and a second mother to many others. Her greatest pride was her gift of hospitality. On any day, she would be happy to place an extra plate, a cup of coffee, or simple friendship at the table for anyone who came through her door. This love of others was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Elaine was a member of St. Patrick's Parish and actively involved in the Deacon community there. She also taught CCD, was a past member of the parish council, past president of the Christian Mothers, and a Eucharistic Minister (EME). As a member of the Fremont community she was a regular blood donor (Elaine was informed her blood was free of impurities and encouraged to donate frequently), past board member of the Care Corps, and quietly donated her time and resources to other charitable organizations. After 41 years of full-time parenting, she started a second career providing childcare in her home, continuing on to work multiple positions at Fremont Area Medical Center until she officially retired at the age of 65.
