William David Hicks was the son of Nicholas Hicks and Frances Finley Hicks (her step-father was named Larkin Carlton). His year of birth was more likely 1851-1853 as he was not enumerated in his parents' 1850 household recorded 13 Dec 1850. His age was recorded as 8 in the 1860 census and 17 in the 1870 census records. -------------------------
