Shirley LaVonne Lighthill, 75, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 at St. Francis Medical Center with her family by her side. Services will be at 2 p.m Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Allen Runyon will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Lighthill was born Feb. 19, 1935, on a farm near Loup City to Carl and Iola (Harris) Mieth. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Lighthill, and her husband of many years, William H. Lighthill. Survivors of the immediate family include a son, Doug Lighthill of Grand Island; three daughters and a son-in-law; Vicki and Paul Ewers of Grand Island, Patricia "Trish" West of Dannebrog and Tracy Schuyler of Grand Island; and a brother and sister-in-law Duane and Colleen Mieth of Rockville. *** Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Michele, Kathryn, Shawn, Chad, Amber, Kim and Treyton; two stepgrandchildren, several great-grand children and many great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in deth by her parents. Shirley grew up in Sherman County and attended country schools and Ravenna High School. She was united in marriaage to William H. Lighthill on Oct. 10, 1951, at Loup City. The couple lived in Ravenna, Litchfield, Rockville, Alda and Cairo; moving to Grand Island in 1953. While raising their children, Shirley worked part time. She was a waitress and for many years an Avon dealer. She sold Christian books for "Succesful Living" and solar heating systems. Shirley also was employed by Wheelers Farm Store, which became Country General from which she retired in 1998. She was a member and served on the Board of The Rock Christian Ministries, a member of the Grand Island Family Church and former member of Abundant Life Christian Center. Shirley enjoyed gardening, playing cards and church activities, especially leading Bible studies; but her family always came first. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
