Vanis, 88, At David City, Abie On Friday morning, April 6, funeral services were conducted at Knott Funeral Chapel for Anton J. Vanis, 88, of Abie, who died on April 3 in Schuyler Memorial hospital of complications resulting from old age. Rev. Boniface Tomek officiated and Florence Johnson was organist. Serving as pallbearers were Al Svoboda, Gene Vanis, Raymond Vanis, Ray Vanis, James Svoboda and Joe Bohuslavsky. Burial was in Abie Catholic cemetery. Those who came from out of town to attend the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Anton Vanis, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Gene Vanis and Gene, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie O'Connell and son, Bob, of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Al Svoboda and Mrs. Lillian Pollard of Schuyler; Mrs. Agnes Vanis and son Ray of Bellwood; and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Vanis and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Vanis of Ulysses. Anton, son of John and Anna Vanis, was born June 13, 1868, in Czechoslovakia and came to this country at the age of 24. He was married at Wahoo and the family engaged in farming in the Abie, Bruno and Brainard localities. In addition to his wife, Anna, he is survived by four children, Anton Vanis of Omaha, Mrs. Anton (Angela) Svoboda of David City, Mrs. Marie O'Connell of Omaha and Ernie Vanis of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Vincent Vanis of David City; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A daughter, Anna, two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
