LUCY BARTUNEK DIED AT HOME OF HER DAUGHTER Mrs. Lucy Bartunek of Abie died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Svoboda near Appleton, Tuesday, Dec. 12. Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 14 at 10 o’clock a.m. from the Abie Catholic church, with the Rev. Boniface Tomek officiating. ''''''' The People's Banner , December 21, 1950, p. 4, col. 8 Funeral Services for Mrs. Lucy Bartunek Held in Abie Dec. 14 Abie – Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Bartunek, 88, who died December 12 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Svoboda, were held from the Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic church at 10:00 in the morning Thursday, Dec. 14, with the Rev. Father Boniface Tomek officiating. Music for the services was given by Mr. and Mrs. Pernicek, accompanied by Martha Bartunek. Pallbearers, all grandsons of the deceased were: Joseph Samek, Raymond Bartunek, John Bartunek Jr., Wm. Svoboda, Joseph Prochaska Jr., and Bernard Bartunek. Burial was in the Bruno [ sic ] Catholic cemetery. Mrs. Bartunek, the daughter of Vaclav and Josephine Shonka, was born January 6, 1862 in Texas. When a small child she went with her parents to Czechoslovakia. After a few years they returned to this country and settled near Spillville, Iowa. Soon after Nebraska was admitted to the union, they moved to Butler county and homesteaded near Abie. On September 28, 1881 she married John Bartunek. To this union were born 12 children, two dying in infancy. Those surviving are: William A. of Bee, John F. of Seward, Frank J. of Abie, Joseph A. of Linwood, Vaclav A. of Bruno. Daughters surviving are: Mrs. J. V. Samek, Linwood; Mrs. John J. Svoboda, David City; Mrs. Joseph F. Prochaska, Linwood; Mrs. Joseph Tschantre, Clarkson, and Mrs. Louis F. Yindrick, David City. She is also survived by 40 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death on April 14, 1939. Mrs. Bartunek was a member of the Catholic church, and a member of the Altar Society, which attended the funeral in a body.
