RAVENNA - Robert J. "Bob" Stickney, 88, of Ravenna, formerly of Kearney, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at Seneca Sunrise in Ravenna. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Kearney. The Rev. Gary Main will officiate. Private burial will be held later at Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. Mr. Stickney was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Poole to Walter and Frances (Mendyk) Stickney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glendoris, and a son, Steve Stickney. Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and a son-in-law, Kristi and Ken Fisher of Ravenna and Sheri Eatherton of Kearney; and a son, Rich Stickney of Alliance. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Melisa (Fisher) Dobish, Marcus Fisher, Wendy (Shaw) Paulsen, Shawn Eatherton, Tye Eatherton, Sage Stickney, Amy (Stickney) Johnson, Emily (Stickney) Theiler, Logan Stickney and Cory Stickney and eight great-grandchildren, Kasidy Dobish, Nolan and Easton Eatherton, Tyler, Trevor and Travis Paulsen, Madison Stickney and Emma Stickney. He grew up on the family farm near Pleasanton and graduated from Pleasanton High School. One of his greatest loves was baseball and he played for and managed numerous teams throughout the state of Nebraska. He was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization before enlisting in the U.S. Air Corp in September of 1942. He served in the European Theatre in WWII and spent two years in England, France and Germany. He returned home in January of 1946. He married Glendoris Basnett on Oct. 25, 1946, in Beloit, Kan. They were married for 62 years until her death in 2009. Bob's finest performance was taking care of Doris during the final innings of her live. They lived in Schuyler, Holdrege, Ravenna and Kearney. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church, Kearney Elks Club, Kiwanis, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Friends of Legion Baseball. He enjoyed volunteering at the Headstart, working with various baseball and softball teams, calling bingo, hunting, fishing, gardening, writing poetry, bowling and dancing. Bob was a longtime friend of Bill W. He worked in a variety of trades until opening his own flooring business. He operated Stickney Custom Floors until his retirement. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Floyd, sister, Gwen Gaymon, and son-in-law, Steve Eatherton. Published in The Grand Island Independent on October 4, 2012
