Bio

Mrs. Fred Diehl, 64, Columbus. Mrs. Diehl, in failing health the past three years, died Tuesday at the Lutheran Hospital. Burial will be in Circle Mound Cemetery in Rising City. Mrs. Diehl was the former Bessie A. Smith, daughter of Alvy and Stella Smith. She was born Feb. 24, 1890 at Bellwood and spent most of her life in that community. She married Ned Callaghan on Dec. 11, 1907 and they were the parents of five children, Merle, now of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Dorothy Workman of Columbus, Mrs. Ina Mae Bernt of Osceola, Orville who is deceased and another daughter who died in infancy. After Mr. Callaghan's death several years ago, she came to Columbus to make her home. On March 21, 1948 she married Fred Diehl at Vermillion, S.D., and he survives her. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by two brothers, Fay Smith of Bellwood and Harold Smith of Aberdeen, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Millie Miller of Columbus and Mrs. Ray Van Matre of Richland; and seven grandchildren.
