Elmer Anthony Horinek, longtime Newkirk area farmer, died Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2012, at Via Christi Village, Ponca City. He was 86. The son of Anton Thomas and Frances Vrbas Horinek, Elmer was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Newkirk. He grew up and received his education in Newkirk, and he graduated from Newkirk High School with the class of 1944. He joined the United States Army Air Corps Dec. 13, 1944. On July 29, 1945, Elmer and Rita Josephine Hoffman were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Amarillo, Texas, by Monsignor John L. Steinlogee. They established their first home in Amarillo, moving later to Shreveport, La. After receiving an honorable discharge May 15, 1946, the couple moved back to Newkirk and renovated an old farm house where they raised their seven children. The Horinek's retired in 1991 after 44 years of farming their land. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. Elmer was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, being a 4th Degree and former grand knight of the 3rd and 4th Degree. He was a member of the American Legion Otto G. Abbott Post 165 for over 60 years, and he was a Gold Star Father. He had been a member of the Newkirk Lions Club and the Elks, and he was past president of the Newkirk Chamber of Commerce. He was a board member of both the Co-op and the Farm Home Administration. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed gardening and playing golf. He was an ardent card player, especially in games of pitch. He was a wedding singer, and he also was bingo caller for the Kaw Nation Bingo, now called South Wind Casino. Elmer and Rita enjoyed traveling, visiting Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, China, Germany, England and other areas of Europe. Elmer is survived by his wife, Rita; their children, James Kevin and Karen Horinek of Wellington, Mark Alan Horinek of Newkirk, Charlotte Jean and Rex Horning of Stillwater, Lisa Marlene and Tim Edens of Ponca City, Diane Renee and George Murray of Magnolia, Tex. and Denise Kay and Todd Greenwood of Keller, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Trudy and Ron Frick of Ponca City; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his other best companion, his schnauzer, Max. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Anthony Horinek; his parents; and siblings, Mary Schwemin, Rose Tubbs, Anna Vap, Elizabeth Vap, Alice Stanbaugh, Thomas J. Horinek, Bernard A. Horinek, Edward Victor Horinek, and Richard Michael Horinek. A Prayer Service will be held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Newkirk, with Father Kevin Ratterman as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Grandsons serving as casket bearers will be Jud Anthony Horning, James Gregory Horinek, Kevin Christopher Horinek, Brian Justin Murray, Stephen George Murray, Ross Anthony Murray and Jordan Dean Burger. Honorary bearers are granddaughters: Meredith Amber Andrews, Sheila Renee Fugarino, Shannon Leanne Wilson, Tiffany Renae Smith, Tara Denae Donnell, Sarah Lynn Edens, Mandy Kay Horton, Morgan Renee Greenwood and Kathryn Elizabeth Edens. A memorial fund has been established with the Newkirk Education Foundation. Contributions may be made in Mr. Horinek's name through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk, OK 74647-0461.
