Mashek, a son of Charles and Agnes Mashek, was born July 26, 1894 near Bruno and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha Nov. 19, 1963. In 1906 he moved with his parents to Ulysses and resided here until 1935 when he went to make his home in Omaha. Mr. Mashek served with Co. A 161 Inf. in World War I from Sept. 21, 1917, to August 11, 1919, serving overseas from Aug. 24, 1918 to June 30, 1919. On February 20, 1928, he was united in marriage to Alice Hromas at the First Presbyterian Church in Weston. To this union one son, Joseph, was born. Surviving are his son, Joseph of Lincoln, three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Birkel of Shelby, Mrs. George Navratil of Rising City, Mrs. Helen Sloup of Seward; three brothers, Paul and Emil of Ulysses and James of Richards, Mo.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. Rosary was said at Knott Funeral Home in David City Thursday evening, Nov. 21, and funeral services were celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. G. J. Schuster Monday morning, Nov. 22, at the Knott Chapel with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery at Ulysses. Pallbearers were Lawrence Birkel of Shelby, Louis Birkel of Columbus, Bernard Hurt, Frank Navratil, Eldon Payne and James Korinek of Ulysses. Attending the services from elsewhere were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Oppliger, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Birkel and Mary Jo and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Birkel, all of Columbus; Mrs. Bessie Birkel, Ed Birkel and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Birkel of Shelby; Mr. and Mrs. George Navratil of Rising City; Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Benson, Mrs. Helen Sloup of Seward; John Duffek and Joseph Mashek of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Alshouse, Mrs. Harold Speicher of David City; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Everson of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. David Kempel of Stirum, N.
