The Columbus, NE. Telegram, February 28, 1980 BIRKEL - Mrs. Bessie Birkel, 80, of 176 S. Road Heritage House in Columbus passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 9:30 at St. Isidore Church in Columbus with Fr. Price officiating. Her body will lie in state at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus after 1 p.m. Friday with scripture service at 8:15 p.m. Friday evening. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery. Birkel was born Oct. 16, 1899 to Charles and Agnes Mashek at Plasi in Saunders County. She married John Joe Birkel in Ulysses on Aug. 9, 1920. She lived in Ulysses and Shelby until moving to Columbus in 1971. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Christian Mothers, and was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church. She is survived by her two sons, Louis and William, one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Oppliger, all of Columbus, twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, a sister, Helen Sloup, and a brother, James Mashek of Ft. Scott, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband and by five brothers and four sisters.
