Miss Mary Leta Haney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Haney, residing four miles north of Rising City, a teacher in the Rising City public schools, passed away at St. Mary's hospital in Columbus at 4:30 o'clock Friday morning, Sept. 16. Death culminated an illness which began two weeks previous, when she had an attack of appendictis. She continued to teach for a week, and then, upon consulting a physician, she was taken at once to the hospital and on Monday, Sept. 9, underwent a surgical operation for a ruptured appendix. Funeral services were held in David City at 9 o'clock, Monday morning, Sept. 19, at St. Mary's Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Ray I. Wageman who celebrated Requiem High Mass. Music was by the children's choir. The pallbearers were Arthur, William and Lester Jones of Ulysses, Charles Branigan of Schuyler and Everett and Marvin Haney of Rising City, all cousins of Leta. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. A long procession of friends accompanied the body to the cemetery. Many persons from other places were in attendance at the funeral. Mary Leta Haney was born at Rising City on September 3, 1904, and at time of her death was aged 28 years and 8 days. After graduating from St. Mary's Academy in Spalding in 1921, she taught school in Dist. No. 30 and four years in her home district school. She taught in the public schools in Dwight three years and in Brainard one year, and this year had begun her second year as teacher of the Third and Fourth Grades in the Rising City schools. She gave liberally of her time and talents and the example of a fine character in her work and had earned the esteem of her coworkers and the community in which she lived. She organized a Camp Fire Group last year and was its guardian. She is survived by her parents and one sister, Mrs. Bernard Parolek, of Schuyler. ___ Card of Thanks - We take this means of expressing our heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors who were so thoughtful during the illness and at time of the death of our darling Leta.
