GERMEROTH, ETHEL M.—Ethel M. Germeroth was born to Orrie and Birdella Pickrell Merrill on July 17, 1899, Geneva, and died on September 23, 1981, in South Gate, Cal., at the age of 82 years,2 months and 6 days. She was one of eight children in the family. Ethel attended Geneva public school and after she was married, she and her husband owned and operated laundries at Geneva and Crete. She also worked in laundries at York and Beatrice. During World War II, she worked at Store-Kraft Manufacturing Plant in Beatrice. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran church of South Gate, Cal. Ethel married Dean E. Smith of Crete on August 23, 1920, and to them two children were born. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; six brothers; and one sister, three husbands, Dean E. Smith, William E. Macdonald, Martin A Germeroth; two step-children, William E Macdonald and Yvonne Oberg; and one grandson, Frankie Dean Smith. Ethel is survived by one brother, Albert Merrill of Gilchrist, Ore.; two sons, William Dean Smith of South Gate, Cal., and James C. Smith of Lincoln; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, three step-sons, James H. Macdonald of Lincoln; Arlen Germeroth of Denison, Ia., and Marvin Germeroth, of Greeley, Col; two step-daughters, Gretchen Harden of Leon, Ia., and Carol Cleveland of Gosquet, Cal.; 14 step grandchildren; and 31 step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-step-grandchildren. Services were held at South Gate, Cal., with graveside services at Geneva public cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 8 October 1981 page 5.
