Born in the village of Slavetice, town of Hrotovice, county of Znojmo, Austrian Empire, now in the Czech Republic. ''''''''''''''' Peoples Banner (David City, Nebr.), December 17, 1931, p. 4, col. 1 ULYSSES Anton Chmelka was born in Czechoslovakia, Bohemia, seventy-five years ago and died at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Lincoln, Nebr., Saturday evening, Dec. 12, 1931. He was married at an early age to Miss Mary Mazanec in Bohemia. Later they came to America, settling in Nebraska. His home for many years past has been near Ulysses where he spent a contended and useful life. Nine sons and four daughters blessed their union. Three sons together with the wife and mother have preceded him in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mary Korinek, Mrs. Anna Rech, and Lewis, of near Ulysses, Mrs. Lloyd Smetak and Mrs. Agnes Osentaski and Joseph of David City, Louie and Emil of Sidney, Nebr., Mike and Fred at home. There are also eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One brother lives at Weston, Nebr. The deceased had been in poor health for a long while and suffered from calculus of the bladder at St. Elizabeth's hospital where he was operated upon Dec. 9, when he appeared to be doing nicely. However, a change came when he answered the summons to come up higher on Dec. 12. The deceased was a splendid man and a very devout Catholic, a kind husband, loving father and helpful neighbor. He was strictly honest and had the esteem and high regard of all who knew him and his presence will be greatly missed. Very unassuming in manner, he was beloved by all who knew him and his loved ones have the condolence of their many friends in their bereavement. Truly, a good man has gone to claim his reward. Mr. Chmelka had been a worthy member of the Catholic Workman Lodge at Dwight for 40 years past. It was the joyful privilege of Mr. Chmelka to receive the "last sacraments" from the hands of his Bishop at Lincoln. Many friends and neighbors were present at his funeral services which were held at the Ulysses Catholic church Tuesday morning, December 15, when Rev. Father Loughran celebrated a Requiem High Mass for the repose of his soul. Rev. Father Hibbs of Bee, gave the sermon. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Dwight. Fred Helmsdoerfer of Lincoln was the mortician in charge.
