Pearl Forginia Smith was born May 22, 1896, in Wilsonville, Alabama (Shelby County), daughter of Joseph Marshall Smith (1869-1938) and Forginia Gertrude "Trudy" Whitfield (1873-1914). The 1900 Federal Census for Columbiana, Alabama (Shelby County) shows Pearl Smith, age 4, born May 1896 in Alabama; living with her father, Marshall Smith, age 31, born March 1869 in Alabama; and her mother, Trudy, age 23, born January 1877 in Alabama. The census shows that Pearl's parents had been married 8 years and had given birth to six children, of which five were still living. Also living in the household were Pearl's siblings: Myrtle Smith, age 6, born August 1893 in Alabama; Elwin, age 2, born May 1896 in Alabama; Iva E. Smith age 1, born July 1897; and Joseph M. Smith, age 2 months, born September 1898; all born in Alabama. Pearl married Rayford "Rafe" Roberts on July 5, 1917. Pearl and Rafe had a daughter, Bonnie Lutrelle Roberts who was born July 3, 1918 in Grayson County, Texas. Rafe died of meningitis in Grayson County, Texas on May 8, 1918, two months before his daughter was born. He was buried in the Warden Cemetery in Weston, Texas (Collin County). The 1920 Federal Census for Justice Precinct 4, Texas (Grayson County) shows Pearl Roberts, a widow and a farm hand, age 24, born in Alabama, and her daughter Lutrelle, age 1 year 5 months, born in Texas; living with Pearl's father, J. M. Smith, a widower, age 51, born in Alabama. Also living in the household were Pearl's siblings: Myrtle Smith, a farm laborer, age 26, born in Alabama; Elwin Smith, a farm laborer, age 22, born in Alabama; Lucy Smith, a farm laborer, age 20, born in Alabama; Marshal Smith, a farm laborer, age 19, born in Alabama; Grady Smith, a farm laborer, age 18, born in Alabama; Leona Smith, a farm laborer, age 17, born in Alabama; Leroy Smith, a farm hand, age 16, born in Alabama; Ralph Smith, a farm hand, born in Texas, age 15; Taylor Smith, age 12, born in Texas; Arthur Smith, age 10, born in Texas; Mary L. Smith, age 8, born in Texas; and Ollie Smith, age 6, born in Texas. In 1929, Pearl married Robert Dickson. Pearl and Robert had a son, Joseph Rayford Dickson, who was born in 1930 in Sherman, Texas (Grayson County). Pearl's daughter Bonnie Lutrelle Roberts died of polio infantile paralysis-meningitis on March 3, 1930 in Sherman, Texas (Grayson County) and was buried in Warden Cemetery in Weston, Texas (Collin County) near her father. Pearl's third marriage was to Luther Bybee in 1940. The 1940 Federal Census for Rural, Texas (Grayson County) shows Luther, a farmer, age 53, born in Kentucky; and his wife Pearl, age 45, born in Alabama. Living with them was Pearl's son by a former marriage, Joe Dickson, age 10, born in Texas. Luther died January 30, 1958 in Grayson County, Texas and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Denison, Texas (Grayson County). Pearl died in 1971 and was buried near her husband.
