Bio
Forginia Gertrude "Trudie" Whitfield Smith died after giving birth to her 16th child, Alma Elizabeth, who then died on Oct. 1, 1914. According to family stories, she asked her oldest child, Myrtle, to take care of the younger children before she died. Myrtle promised her mother and she did just that. Myrtle never married, but ran the farm, cared for her father, raised her younger siblings, and then raised her sisters' children when they died from childbirth. Trudie's parents were John Martin Whitfield (1854-1925) and Mary Elizabeth Wright (1848-1936), who were from Alabama.
