John Henry Wagner age 79, son Emma Stanton and Hans Wagner was born July 12, 1899 in Woods Hollow near Turin, Iowa and passed away Sunday September 3 after illnesses of several years at Elmwood in Onawa, Iowa, where he had been since June and the past week in a Sioux City hospital. He attended the Hiawatha Country School as a child. He became a member of the United Methodist Church in Turin in his youth. He was united in marriage to Louise M Mortensen of Moorhead, Iowa on March 4, 1925 in Onawa, Iowa. They became the parents of five children. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1975. He chose farming as his vocation and lived in the Turin area until moving to the town in 1947, where he continued to labor for area farmers, also town work and held the position of Turin's Marshall a number of years. He was caretaker of the Belvidere Cemetery over 20 years and during the same period with his wife, were custodians of the local church until his retirement to Center Heights in Onawa in 1972 due to his ill health. In a moment of reflection, his social security card was issued September 6, 1938 the day that was to become 40 years later, a time to fold hands and be laid to final rest, during the holiday honoring the worth of laboring men. He was a devoted husband and father and a diligent worker to provide for them including a good education for which his children are grateful. Whatever tasks he had he always gave his best, to this add honesty and integrity plus ever willingness to help his neighbors. His love of all his children was ever evident whether his own, his grandchildren, nieces and nephews or his neighbors. Their health and welfare his constant concern everyday of his life. For many years his hobby was gardening and flowers, The park he made on his Turin lots is still intact to enjoy. His chapel was the beloved hills, the abundant fields with his love for birds and animals to watch and feed. Gods wonders never escaped his eyes. He is survived by his widow, Louise, two daughters, Mrs Leonard (Emma Lou) Stanislav of Onawa and Mrs David (Esther Mae) Kenyon of Sherman Oaks, California, two sons Kenneth E of Houston, Texas and Kermit L of Lindsey, California. Seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs Margaret Johannsen of Denver, Colo., Mrs Albert (Alice) Anderson of Sioux City, four brothers, Carl of Onawa, Rev Charles of Carl Junction, MO, Rev Ernest of Houston, Texas, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents an infant son John Andrew, five sisters, Anna, Kate, Elsie, Florence and Dorothy, two brothers, Claude and Louis. The service was held September 6, 1978 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Pearson Funeral Home with Rev Everett Epperson officiating. Soloist was Mrs Orville Rutledge who sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Going down the Valley, One by One" accompanied by Mrs Robert Oehler. Bearers were Dick Smith, MIchael Mikkelson, Howard Chapman, Chris Mathison, Walter Mikkelson, Robert Stangel. Interment was in the Belvidere Cemetery at Turin, Iowa. Onawa Democrat 14 September 1978
