Bio
Joseph C. Hurst, 93, of Ada Oklahoma and former Independence resident, died Wednesday, July 18, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel. Interment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be performed by detail by the United States Air Force detachment from McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the Air Force Sergeants Association and remembrances will be received at the funeral home. Joseph Collins Hurst was born February 6, 1919 at Kingsland, Arkansas, the son of Miles Phillip Hurst and Louise Coleman (Neal) Hurst. He attended school and graduated from High School in Calera, Oklahoma. After his schooling he joined the National Guard and later joined the United States Army in 1940 and served during World War II. After his service with the Army, he joined the United States Air Force and was discharged November 1, 1969 at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. He served 29 years in the Air Force. After his service, he moved to Independence and worked for Starcraft Boats from 1969 until 1974. He then worked for Bruest from 1974 until his retirement in 1984. On February 5, 1945 at Independence, Kansas, he was united in marriage. She survives at the home.
