Bio

Roy W. Lammers, 93, of Hagerstown, Maryland, formerly of Durant, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012, at his home in Hagerstown. A private family Celebration of Life service in Hagerstown, Maryland, will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 15, at Haven Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, with Pastor Linda Alessandri officiating. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Washington or the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant, Iowa, in his memory. Funeral services in Durant, Iowa, will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 16, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant. Burial will be in Durant Cemetery, Durant, Iowa. Roy William Lammers was born August 28, 1918, in Upland, Nebraska, the son of Christian and Dorathe (Klahn) Lammers. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served as an airplane mechanic on the aircraft carrier, USS Antietam. He married Helen Augusta Eriksen on September 9, 1942. He was employed as an independent distributor for Midway Oil Company in Durant for 37 years, until he retired. He also drove a school bus for the Durant schools and drove cars for the Ron Alpen Ford Company in Durant. Helen preceded him in death on July 24, 2004. He then moved to Hagerstown, Maryland, to be near his daughter and her family. He served on the Durant Council and as Mayor of Durant for 12 years. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant and later with Haven Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. He enjoyed bowling and sponsored his own bowling team and was a Boy Scout leader for eight years in Durant. He was an avid gardener and loved to grow flowers and vegetables and woodworking, making furniture and crafts. He enjoyed the meetings at the Northern Avenue Legion. He was a member of the Durant American Legion Post #430. Surviving are two daughters, Bonita (Edward) Distad of Hagerstown, MD, and Patricia (Lee) Costa of Bowdoin, ME; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Julietta Lammers of Minden, NE; three brothers, Ralph (Joanne) Lammers of Arapahoe, NE, William Lammers of Denver, CO, and Donald (JoAnn) Lammers of Minden, NE; one sister-in-law, Mae Eriksen of Moscow; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters, Lena Scharff, Bertha Fries, Anna Bower and Clara Nitzel, four brothers, Carl, Jacob, Alfred and Willis Lammers, one sister-in-law, Luella Lammers, one niece, Kathy Lallman and three nephews, Delmer Scharff, Leonard Lammers and Clifford Fries.
