FALL IS FATAL TO JOHN NETH SR. old Moberly Resident Dies at Franklin Street Home; Funeral Friday EIGHT DAUGHTERS AND SON SURVIVE John Neth Sr. 87, a resident of Moberly since 1871, died at 7:50 this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. P. Vandergrift, 1127 Franklin street. Mr. Neth fell at his home Saturday night, December 21, as he was getting up from a chair, and sustained a broken right leg, near the hip. The leg was placed in cast at McCormick Hospital, and he returned to his home Christmas Eve, but shock of the accident at his advanced age caused his death. Mr. Neth was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1848. He received his early education in the schools of Germany and came to the United States in 1862, locating first in Philadelphia, PA. After several years there, he moved to Hannibal, where he lived for several years. TO MOBERLY IN 1871 He was married November 29, 1869, to Miss Mary Gingrich, formally of Hannibal, but then living in Moberly. They moved to Moberly in 1871, buying a cottage which stood where the local post office now stands. In 1880 they moved this cottage to its present location, 1126 Bond Street, where they lived for many years. Moving of that cottage in those days was a big job. Large trees had to be cut down to make room for moving of the house. When the undertaking was completed, the house was the third in that northwest section of Moberly. After moving to Moberly, Mr. Neth on March 7, 1871, engaged in the manufacture of cigars, making a cigar known as "Moss Agate" , and opened the first cigar store to be established in Moberly. This store was located at 420 West Coates street, and later at 121 West Reed street. After several years in the cigar business, Mr. Neth closed it out because of his health and entered the employ of the Wabash in the shops here. He worked in the woodworking department there for about 20 years, until his retirement in 1913. 9 SURVIVING CHILDREN Mr. And Mrs. Neth were the parents of eleven children. Two died in infancy, one of whom was the second person buried in Oakland Cemetery here. The nine surviving children all live in Moberly and seven of them, six daughters and a son, live in the square block (1100) Franklin and Bond) surrounding the home. Mrs. Neth died February 3, 1924. The surviving children are: Mrs. Vandergrift, Mrs. Allen Jones, Mrs. Charles Woodington, Mrs. J. D. Walker, Mrs. Nellie Hale, Mrs. Charles Kelly, John Neth Jr. Mrs. James Simcoe and Mrs. Paul Hackett. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. The grandchildren are Roseanna Jones, John and Katherine Hale, Mary Louise Kelly, Virginia, Martha Sue and Eugene Earl (Sonny) Hackett, James N. And Dan Simcoe, and Doris Neth. The great-grandchild is Marilyn Ann Simcoe. Funeral services will be conducted at the Vandergrift home at 2'oclock Friday afternoon, by the Rev. E. D. Owen, pastor of the first Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
