Bio

Henry Gembala Obituary Henry was born August 23, 1910 in Tarnov, Nebraska to Joseph and Veronica (Silver) Gembala. He grew to manhood on a farm near Loup City, Nebraska and graduated from Loup City High School in 1928. He studied civil engineering at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) from 1928 to 1933 and was a cadet officer in the Army ROTC program. Upon departing the University, he joined the US Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) as a civil engineering leader and subsequently transferred into the Department of Agriculture (USDA) Soil Conservation Service (SCS) program living and working in many South Central Nebraska towns. He held several engineering and management positions with SCS including serving in North Africa (Algeria and Tunisia) during the mid and late 1960s assigned to the US Agency for International Development (AID). He retired from USDA (SCS) in 1973 at the Lincoln, Nebraska Regional SCS office and moved to Rialto, California. He then consulted for White Engineering Corporation as a civil engineer and performed soil and water engineering studies and did hydrology engineering consulting for the governments of Haiti, Jamaica, Indonesia, Burma, Mauritania and Afghanistan during the period 1974 to 1980. Henry fully retired in 1981 and subsequently moved to Fair Oaks in 1994 to be nearer to his children and grandchildren. He passed away at sunrise on Easter April 15, 2001. He was preceded in death by his eldest son Eugene Robert Gembala in 1993. A memorial service will be conducted at the Reichert's Funeral Home, 7320 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 95610 on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 11 AM. Internment (without services) will be Monday April 23rd at Montecito Memorial Park, San Bernardino, CA.
