MURDER SUSPECT HELD IN SHOOTING OF WOMAN A 57 years old Vernon Parish resident, Fred Clemens, is being held in the Vernon Parish jail without bond on a charge of first degree murder following the fatal shooting of his 55 years old wife, Mrs. Leona G. Clements, early Thursday night, a spokesman for the Sheriff's department has reported. Officers reported that Clemens allegedly fatally MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE FILED AGAINST PAIR shot his wife during an argument at the mobile home of her mother, Mrs. Fronie Goins, at Cravens about 8pm Thursday while Mrs. Goins and a brother of the victim. Dan Goins, were present. Vernon Parish Coroner Dr. S.J. Jones reported that Mrs. Clements died of a gunshot wound of the right shoulder near the base of the neck. She also suffered a laceration of the head when she was allegedly struck with the pistol prior to the shooting, officers reported. The officers reported that Clements fled the scene but later surrendered at his mobile home in the Clemens Trailer Park located on highway 171 south of Leesville. The pistol, believed to be a 32 caliber, was not recovered by authorites. Clements told officers that he threw the gun from his car as he traveled from Cravens back to Leesville. Investingating officers included Chief Deputy Mcalcom Smart, Deputies Archie Lee Martin, Tommy Wise and Carl Wilson. They were also assisted by State Police officers, Deputy Coloner Gil Jeane, Jr. assisted Dr. Jones at the scene.
