Michael Gibson Smith was the last of twelve children of his parents Patrick Smith and Mary Reilly Poole. He was born 17 Nov 1896 in San Augustine where he spent his childhood until his father's death in 1906. Following his father's death, he and his brother, Philip, attended St. Basil's Military School in Waco, Tx for a few years and then returned to San Augustine to attend high school, which he finished in 1912. Following high school, he attended Texas A&M and then the U.S. Military Academy from which he graduated as a 2nd lieutenant. He was on the football team at both Texas A&M and at West Point. He served 30 years of active service in the U. S. Army Field Artillery, retiring as a Colonel 30 Jun 1947. He died in 1994 in Barnwell, SC according to a source. Bessie Smith, in July, 1997, wrote the following about Mike: After a year or so at Texas A&M, Mike received an appointment to West Point. As WWI was in progress, his class was rushed through in three years in order to furnish officers for the Army. Tthey were to be assigned to command troops in Europe, but the war ended and instead they traveled to Europe with their teachers to study. Mike graduated from West Point a Second Lieutenant and retired a Colonel in the U. S. Army. Mike had played football at both Texas A&M and West Point (many broken legs in his career.) His military assignments included: Olympia, Washington, Fayetteville, North Carolina. When he retired he moved to Barnwell, South Carolina (married three wives - Mary, Elizabeth and Zelma).
