Bio

Herald Coaster, November 15, 2000: Funeral services for Herman Sliva, 92, of East Bernard, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, with Rev. Richard Johnston S.C.J. celebrating the funeral mass and Rite of Committal. Entombment followed in the Guardian Angel Cemetery Mausoleum in Wallis. Mr. Sliva was born on Dec. 13, 1907 in East Bernard to Charles Sliva and Magdalena Marak Sliva. He passed away Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, in Wharton. Serving as pallbearers were Mr. Sliva's grandsons, Jason Sliva, Ronnie Sliva, Kenneth Sliva, Robert Carson, Joe Rachunek, and Phillip Rachunek. Mr. Sliva was raised in the Bernard Prairie area and attended school there. On Oct. 15, 1933, he married Eleanor Rohan at Guardian Angel Catholic Church. Mr. Sliva was a farmer in the Wallis and East Bernard areas all of his life, and was a member of the Guardian Angel Catholic Church and the KJT in Wallis. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Sliva of East Bernard; children, Roman Sliva and wife, Georgie, of East Bernard, Nelva Carson and husband, Robert, of Sugar Land, Georgia Butler and husband, Willie, of Sweeny, Delbert Sliva of East Bernard, and Ben Sliva and wife, Mary Ann, of Richmond; 14 grandchildren, Ronnie Sliva and Debbie Sliva Zapalac of East Bernard, Kenneth Sliva of Inez, Sharon Sliva Svoboda of Sealy, Robert Carson of Sugar Land, Clinton Carson of Downer's Grove, Ill., Sandra Carson Winkel of Rockwall, Joe Rachunek, Phillip Rachunek, Jeffrey Rachunek, and Eric Rachunek of Sweeny, Jason Sliva and Bradford Sliva of Richmond, and Chad Sliva of Washington, D.C.; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Sliva was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Magdalena Sliva; brothers, Jim, Alvin, Adolph, William, and Albert Sliva; and sister, Lydia Jochec.
