Bio
Robert "Bob" Smolik, 82, of Burwell died Friday, March 2, 2012, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Bob was born June 3, 1929, in Valley County to Frank and Anna (Fajmon) Smolik. Bob graduated from Burwell High School in 1946. After graduation, he farmed and ranched with his dad. On June 13, 1951, Bob entered the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on May 23, 1953. After the service he returned to the family farm. Bob married Yvette Anne May on Oct. 21, 1961, in Cheney. They lived in Burwell and continued to farm and ranch. To this union eight children were born. Bob enjoyed working in the outdoors, where he could observe nature, and working in the shop building different things. He liked to fish and pass out Tootsie Rolls to the grandkids. He will be remembered for being a practical joker and for giving the flowers that he grew to different people. He was a member of the American Legion Post 298, VFW, the Knights of Columbus and the JCBJ. Bob was preceded in death by: parents; grandchildren, Jason Pokorny, Zachary and Ariel Smolik; and son-in-laws, Don Chalupa and Ricky Roach. Survivors are: wife, Yvette Smolik of Burwell; children, Marilyn Roach of Lincoln, Janet Chalupa of Grand Island, Linda and Darryl Aldrich of Hastings, Laura and Dan Pokorny of Ord, Diane Smolik of Lincoln, Thomas Smolik and fiance, Amanda Stuart, of Lincoln, Dennis and McKenna Smolik of Lincoln and Greg and Heather Smolik of Minden; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, EJ Smolik of Golden Valley, Ariz., and LeRoy Smolik of Omaha; sisters, Wilma Johnstone of Elizabeth, Colo., and Delores and Jerome Kuta of Grand Island and father-in-law, Iven May of Lincoln. Burial was in the Cottonwood Cemetery, Burwell, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on March 3, 2012
