Bio

Bessie A. Klauz Garrett, 88, of Shelton died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Sioux Falls, S.D., while visiting her nephew. Bessie was born July 29, 1923, at Deweese to Joseph and Bessie (Barta) Klauz. She was welcomed into heaven by: husbands, Charles O. Stewart and Glen J. Garrett. Survivors are: sisters and brother-in-law, Lillian Grant of Valparaiso and Francis and Kenneth Mays of Overland Park, Kan. Bessie grew up in Deweese receiving her education there. She began working in cafes at the age of 11, washing dishes then waitressing and later as a cook. She moved to Superior and that is where she met the love of her life Charles O. Stewart. They married in Colorado and later moved to Kansas, where they owned and operated a bar. They moved to Shelton and Bessie ran the Swiss Cafe. Mr. Stewart's work took them to Cozad and Wray, Colo., before he quit the construction business and joined Bessie as owner/operator of a small cafe in Holdrege. They later purchased the tavern and cafe in Ravenna. They sold that business after several years and returned to Shelton, where they purchased the Motor Inn. Mr. Stewart died in 1974. Bessie continued to operate the Motor Inn. Bessie married Glen J. "Jack" Garrett and they lived in Shelton. She was known from coast to coast because of the people who stopped to eat her delicious cooking and homemade pies. She will be missed by all. Mr. Garrett died on Jan. 14, 1989. Bessie retired, selling the business after Glen's death. Bessie especially enjoyed cooking for family, spending time in the kitchen whether cooking, baking or just doing dishes. She also enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and crocheting. Bessie was also welcomed into heaven by: parents, sisters, Mary Kinchloe, Anna Elteste, Helen Barta, Julia Fiedler and brothers, James and Jospeh Klauz.
