Bio

Lillian Klauz was born at Spring Ranch near Deweese, NE on December 15, 1920 to Joseph and Bessie (Barta) Klauz. She lived there until 1930 when her folks moved to Lexington, NE and farmed for five years. On April 6, 1936, she married Nathan Grant. They were married for 56 years. After living around the Lexington area for some time, they moved down around the Davey, Agnew and Raymond area and remained there until Nathan's death in 1992. Before his death, Nathan bought a house and twenty acres of land near Brainard. Lillian moved there shortly after the auction of Nathan's farm machinery. She only stayed there a short while and then decided to buy a lot in Valparaiso and had a house brought in. This was her permanent place until moving into South Haven. Lillian was a hard-working lady and spent a lot of time out in the fields working along side Nathan and her children when they grew old enough to help. She always had a huge garden. However, they did find time to have some fun such as meeting up with her brother Jim and fishing in an area of a canal that drained from Johnson Lake at Lexington, NE and they liked to go polka dancing on Saturday nights when there was a dance hall at Emerald, NE years ago. Her life thoroughly changed soon after moving to Valparaiso. She became a member of the Senior Citizens where she met and got acquainted with many friends. She was elected as officer on several occasions and proceeded as president many times when the then president had to be out of town. She was with the Valparaiso Women's Club, and she became a member of the Red Hat Ladies Organization. As she grew older and was unable to drive herself to these functions, she had so many friends who would pick her up and bring her home afterwards. She cherished all of them. Friends would call upon her to join them for dinner downtown Valparaiso and they all would return to her house for card playing afterwards or they wanted to take her to the Legion Club for Sunday morning breakfast and then playing cards after that. She belonged to a card playing group which she dearly loved. Sometimes it would get cancelled due to someone not able to make it and she would be terribly disappointed. One other true love she had was sewing quilts and she would spend hours and hours working on projects of this type. Even after her eyesight started to fail and it was so hard for her to thread the needle or see to sew a straight seam she moved forward as she enjoyed it so much.
