His obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, April 26, 1934. William J. Slates, 71, of Perry Township, ended his life by hanging himself in his barn Friday morning. With his nephew, Robert Davis, he had gone to the barnyard to begin the chores at 6:30 o'clock. After assigning Davis to the milking, he entered the barn, where his body was discovered by Mrs. Slates an hour later. Mr. Slates had been despondent over ill health for some time. Mr. Slates was married in 1884 to Elizabeth Goff, who preceded him in death in 1904. In 1909 he was married to Martha Gotschall. He was a member of Emanual's Lutheran Church at Kilgore and lived all his life on a farm. He was born March 15, 1863 in Perry Township. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William Jr., a student at Capital University, in Columbus, and one sister, Mrs. Robert Davis of Perrysville. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Kilgore Lutheran Church with Rev. Earl Stainbrook, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in Kilgore Cemetery.
