Services for Deryl L. Owen, 88, Athens are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Saturday in Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Green officiating. Graveside services with honors under the auspices of Hopkins County Military Coalition will be at 2:00 P M in Cumby Cemetery, Cumby. Rev. John Ginn will officiate. Mr. Owen died February 23, 2012 in Athens. He was born February 14, 1924 in Cumby to the late Marshall Emmett and Rhoda C. Jenkins Owen. One of our World War II heroes, Deryl served in the U. S. Army Infantry and was seriously injured on Normandy Beach six days after D Day. He was recipient of the purple heart award and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He resided in Irving from 1954 until 1981 where he was a barber for 25 years. Upon retirement Deryl moved to Lake Athens. He was preceded in death by his wife Ava Loriece Smith Owen in 2003, brother Buford Owen, sister Floy Naston and grandson Jerry Don Wright, Jr. Survivors include son Jerry Wright and wife Mary Lou, Athens, daughter Peggie Davis and husband J. C., Irving, three granddaughters, four great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.
