Pvt to Corporal in Capt. John B. Hamilton's Company1st Tenn Nounted Militia, Seminole (Florida) War. Enlisted June 16, 1836; corporal July 4, 1836 to Jan. 14, 1837; enlisted as Second Sergt. May 28, 1846, to Capt of Co. C, 1st Reg Tenn Mounted Infantry (Mexican)War, June 6, 1846 to May 29 1847; Lieutenant Col 19th (Biffle's) Div, Forrest's Cavalry Corps, Dept ofTenn. and Georgia, Confederate Army; resigned Dec 13, 1864 physical reasons. He became a surveyor, a profession which required much physical strength, and laid out many of the surveys in Maury Co. and Lewis Co. Tn. In 1843 when Lewis Co. was cut from Maury Co., both his and his father's land became part of Lewis Co. He and John Akin were appointed by the Commission to emply a competent surveyor to make the necessary surveys to establish the boundary line of Lewis County. He and Elizabeth Cooper had 5 boys and 2 girls; Thomas Melville, John Alexander, James Williams, Dorcas Clementine, Samuel enry, Mary Elizabeth and Albert Bruce Cooper. Thomas Melville b. circa 1840 in Maury Co. Tn. d. Feb 1862 killed in Civil War at Fort Donelson. Co. C. 3rd Clack's Tenn. Infantry. John Alexander Cooper b 26 Sep 1844 in Lewis Co. Tn. d. 7 Jun 1933, San Angelo, Tx, buried Rough Creek Cemetery novice Texas. never married. Eldest child of Col. Robert Melville and Catherine Cooper Cooper.
