One of 6,000 Confederate soldiers buried here who died as Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas in Chicago.
One of ten sons of Col. Robert Melville and Catherine Cooper to served in the C.S.A. during the Civil War. He died with 4 of his other brothers, and 4 brothers wounded and 1 unscathed. Born in Maury/Lewis Co. Tennessee. Samuel Gwin Cooper was captured at Fort Donelson when the Confederates there surrendered. He was transported to Camp Douglas in Chicago where he died a few months later of pneumonia. He is buried along with thousands of other Confederate prisoners of war in the huge burial mound outside of what was Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.
