Charles J. "Charlie" Jones Sr., 88, of Grand Island died on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Charlie was born on July 9, 1923, in Cook to Charles and Dephia (Coulter) Jones. Charlie married Rose Sanchez on Dec. 22, 1951. She preceded him in death. Charlie graduated from Julian High School. He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 14, 1943, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1945. The couple lived in Grand Island, where he managed the Greyhound bus depot. He also worked for Geer-Melkes Construction Co. Charlie loved gardening, fishing and being outside. He enjoyed watching baseball. He had a great compassion for the Disabled American Veterans. His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his great-grandkids. Survivors are: daughters, Charlotte Wilson of Conroe, Texas, and Monica Gentry of Grand Island; sons, Nick Jones and Charles Jones Jr., both of Grand Island; brother, Ed Jones of California; sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Jerry Jensen and Bonnie and Dale Wurtele, all of Nebraska City; grandchildren, Shawn, Nicole, Pete, John, Megan, C.J., Jacob, Brandi, William, Leah, and Missy, and 26 great-grandchildren. In addition to: wife, Charles was preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Betty, Jean, Florence and Elizabeth; and brother, Bill Jones. Burial was in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on February 10, 2012
