Daughter of Joshua and Lydia (Bayle) Batten; sister of: John W., Mary E., Alice M., Evelina M., Jesie, Thomas T., Joseph J., Forrest A., and Robert G. Julia married Harry "Bert" Karnes on February 1, 1897 at Wayne, Nebraska. Their attendants were Harry's brother, and Julia's sister, Thomas H. and Mary E. (Batten) Karnes. Julia and Harry were the parents of Joe Leroy, Dea, Robert Forest, Ina Lydia, and Raymond Orie. Julia J. (Batten) Karnes's funeral was held at the First Lutheran Church in Allen, Nebraska. ----------------------------------------- Harry and Julia farmed east of Concord on the land homesteaded by Harry's father. Their home was always open to friends and family. Traveling salesmen were always sure to get fed a good meal and a place to sleep. Over the year, there were many barn dances held at the Karnes farm. The Karnes took in orphan children; fed and clothed them until they were able to take care of themselves. Harry's father lived with them after the death of his wife. Harry's sister, Kittie M. Lovell, died in 1894, leaving two children, ElRoy and ; they are listed on the 1900 census living with Julia and Harry as niece and nephew. (Information from grandson, Gene E. Fletcher)
