Elbert Larry Toombs, age 76, died Tuesday January 17,2012 at Covenant Specialty Hospital due to complications of diabetes. ? He was born August 20, 1935 in Brownsboro, Texas to Elbert Miller and Ollie Buena Toombs. Mr. Toombs is survived by his wife of 55 years Roena Marie Toombs, three children: Sherry Lynn Pittenger, Larry Dale Toombs, and Martina Marie Bauer. He also leaves behind a sister Linda Sue Caldwell of Campo, Colorado, 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Juanita Montoya, Erma Ruth Toombs, Jonell Kittle and Bob Toombs. He grew up in Texhoma, Oklahoma where he attended school and graduated high school in 1954. He joined the Air Force January 20, 1955. He was a turret gunner on the B-36 airplane. His dutiies were turret gunner and weather observer. He later chose meteorology as his career and became a hurricane chaser. Flying thru the center of hurricanes measuring wind speeds. After being gone most of the time he transferred to being a meteorologist on base so he could be with his wife and children. After serving his country in Vietnam in 1969 & 1970 he returned home to finish his tour before retiring with 25 years in the Air Force. He then went to work for the National Weather Service. He was with them for 20 years and retired at the age of 65. He spent his retirement years taking grandchildren hunting and fishing. He was a husband, father, and grandfather and also a good friend. He lent a helping hand when anyone needed help and if you knew this man you knew he was an all around good person. He will be dearly missed. Memorial services will be February 12, 2012 at the Church of Christ in Shallowater, Tx at 1:30 p.m.
