Sister Irene Marie Haidusek (nee Mary Ann Haidusek), a native of West and a member of the Sisters of Divine Providence, died of Leukemia December 27, 1997 in El Paso at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Molly and Jack Reed. She and her sister, Sister Mary Martin, also a Sister of Divine Providence, were spending Christmas in El Paso with the Reeds when she became critically ill. She was 75. The funeral Mass was December 31 in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center. Rev. Ralph Intranuevo, CSJ, presided. Sister Rita Rose Bily assisted. Scripture passage and prayers were read by Sisters of Divine Providence, Sister Frederick Joseph Pirotina and Sister Regina Decker. Symbols of Sister Irene Marie’s religious life were placed on the coffin while Sister Katherine Ann Hays read their meaning. Sister Henrietta Schroeder and Marian Frances Margo placed the white pall, a reminder of Baptism; Sister Immaculate Gentemann, the Bible; Sister Bernadine Gaidusek, the crucifix; Sister Agnes Louise Zotz, the rosary; and Sister Elizabeth McCullough, a copy of the Constitution of the Sisters of Divine Providence. Musicians were Sister Madlyn Paper, cantor, Sister Emelene Matocha, violinist, and Sister Evelyn Marie Rischner, organist. Sister Irene Marie was born October 15, 1922, to Louis and Mary Cocek Haidusek. She attended St. Mary’s School in West, staffed by the Sisters of Divine Providence. She joined the Congregation of Divine Providence in 1937. She finished her high school studies during her formation program and then attended Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1948 and master’s degree in 1956, with majors in English and Education respectively. She made her profession of religious vows in 1942 and then began 50 years of teaching in the elementary grades. She taught in Cameron, Houston, Castroville, Fredericksburg, Tours, West, Ennis and San Antonio-all in Texas, and Vinita, Oklahoma. In 1992, she became a tutor for the San Antonio Literacy Council and did this work until she became ill in 1995. Sister Irene Marie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Irene Scott. Survivors include three sisters, ten nieces. Also, seven nephews and their wives, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Burial was in Providence Cemetery. Zizik-Kearns and Rieb-Saunders Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
