Obituary posted in the Lubbock Morning Avalanche Journal on Tues, April 14, 1936 J.N. Gaines, 69, retired farmer who had lived in Lubbock since moving from Matador nine years ago, died of a several months illness at 5:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. Death was at his home at 2315 Fourteenth street. Funeral rites will be read at 3 o'clock this afternoon in Sanders Chapel, conducted by Elder Liff Sanders of Lubbock and Rev. H.R. Hicks of Canyon. Bearers will be R.H. Heater, A. Sansom, W.R. Fickas, George Vestal, Louis Murfee, G.C. Mitchell, W.W. Cooper, Webb Camack and J.B. Peters. The widow, four sons and six daughters survive. The children are C.E. and J.B. Gaines of Amarillo, C.T. and J.H. Gaines of Lubbock, Mrs. H.R. Schnider of El Paso, Mrs. M.A. Catton of Matador, Miss Nannie Mae Gaines of Memphis, and Misses Virginia, Velma and Monda Gaines of Lubbock.
