Bio

Velma Gaines services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Rev. John Ballard officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home. Velma was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Matador and moved to Lubbock in 1927. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Texas Tech University. She taught school one year in Floydada, then worked as a bookkeeper for Ellwood Estates for over 50 years. She was very active in the First Baptist Church in Lubbock and a longtime member of the Prime Time Choir there. After her last sister's death in 1999 she took up residence with a niece in the Clear Lake Area of Southeast Harris County. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Nancy Spearman, Brenda Gaines, Joan Griffith, Patsy Kelly Halbach, Kenneth E. Patton and Gordon Patton and many other grand nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, Lubbock.
