Bio

(There was not a findagrave memorial in Laurel Land Memorial Park for Augustus B. Norrell when I created this memorial for him.) Rev. Norrell was a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher and missionary. His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Mabry, daughter of Rev. James Griffin Mabry and Abigail Bishop Roberts Mabry. She died in 1883. He married his second wife Martha Jennie Wilson in 1886. His mother, Sarah, and his brother, Henry, are buried in Old Bartlett Cemetery in Williamson County, Texas. Sister Georgia is buried in Texas. The sad story is that his dad went to California during the Gold Rush in the early 1850's, came home once to see his family but returned to the West Coast and was never heard from again. Years later, Sarah moved to Bartlett in Williamson County, Texas. She died soon afterward and was buried in the municipal cemetery at Bartlett, Texas. - - - - - Augustus Benton Norrell, was a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher and missionary in West Texas for the American Sunday School Union, He was born at Talking Rock,Gilmer County, Georgia, on April 14, 1846. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army at his home in Pickens County, Georgia, on May 10, 1862, serving as private in Company L, 36th Regiment (Broyles') Georgia Infantry. He died at his home in Dallas, Texas, on May 22, 1923, and was buried there in Laurel Memorial Park. - - - - - REV. A. B. NORRELL DIES AT DALLAS, FATHER OF NORRELLS HERE DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS N DALLAS Rev. A.B. Norrell, father of Byron and Paul Norrell and Mrs. Lura Skinner of Ada, died at his home in Dallas, Thursday afternonn at 4 o'clock. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment took place in Dallas. Paul Norrell had been at the bedside of his father since Sunday morning, Byron arrived Thursday evening at 6 o'clock, two hours after his father had passed away. Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Byron Norrell went down Thursday night for the funeral. Rev. Norrell had been in failing health for a number of years. Unable to continue his work in God's cause, he has often expressed his desire to go to his reward and death was not unwelcome to him. Although realizing that he probably could not recover, everything humanly possible was done to restore the broken body of health. His age of 78 years, however, was too advanced for skill to restore the soundness of body. Rev. Norrell since early manhood has been a Presbyterian preacher. Most of his life was spent in Sunday school work, much of his time being spent in Western Texas, organizing and encouraging Sunday schools in that section when the settlements were far apart and the work was most difficult. He has visited Ada many times, and score of people here came to love him. He had no enemies and he made friends readily and held them permanently. He often expressed his desire to be buried in Rosedale Cemetery, and the children had planned to carry out his wishes. During the last few days, however, he changed his mind and wanted his body to rest in the Lone Star state where he had labored most of his life." -The Ada Weekly News, Ada, Oklahoma, Thursday, May 15, 1924 (Thanks very much to Kris Abelli for sharing this obituary)
