CARLSBAD -- James Petska passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the age of 89. He was born on November 24, 1921 in Burwell, Nebr. After high school, James entered the University of Nebraska to play football for the Cornhuskers. When WWII began, James left the University to join the Marine Corps. James went on to serve in three wars: WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After serving 27 years in the Marine Corps, he retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. In 1987, Jim and Joyce returned to Nebraska and lived in St. Paul for the next 19 years. While in St. Paul, James served on the City Council from 1992 to 1996 and on the Housing Authority from 1987 to 1992. In 2006, the Petskas returned to Carlsbad to be closer to their children and grandchildren. James is survived by his wife, Joyce; three children: daughter, Sandra and her husband Robert; son, Kenneth and his wife Jannine; and daughter, Cynthia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 27, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.
